In 1943 the M6 heavy tank was accepted into production, an the first model came off the production line later that year. There was 300 M6/M6A1 tanks in the first batch with 150 going to the army, and the other 150 going to Allied powers. As D-Day loomed over the horizon another 300 was ordered, and built again being split 150 between the army and US allies. How ever, when D-DAy came around the M6 proved rather ineffective in combat, it's main gun not much stronger then the typical M4(76), and it's armor barely able to hold up against German AT weapons. The M6 had to fix these problems or be cancelled.
In mid-late 1944 a new variant was designed. It differed from the main production model as it's frontal upper/lower glacial plates were not placed at a consistent angle, and was thickened to 152 mm, as was the turret face. The tank was then given the M3 90 mm gun, but to make room the bow machine gun, and 37 mm gun was removed. This new variant was dubbed the M6A1(90)W HVSS, or the M6A1E8.
The M6A1(90)W proved more effective on the battle field then previous models with the tank not suffering much in mobility, and with it's increased armor, and stronger gun it was now a match for the German Tiger, and Panther tanks. Still the tank was a large target, and had a slow rotation speed.
Although the M6A1(90)W was an improvement over previous models, the flaws the tank had limited the production to around 600 with development, and production space being given over to the M26 Pershing which was a more promising design.

This was a request made by: Sgt-Turbo who wanted to know what an M6A1 would look towards the end of the war if it was accepted.
